Can Christians communicate with the dead? This was the question someone asked in an online forum I belong to.
Someone offered what I call a wrong scriptural answer to justify this question. As usual, I was able, by God’s grace, to offer a counter answer to the solution offered by this person.
The purpose of this post, Can Christians communicate with the dead, is to show you the weird scriptural answer or solution this person offered and the counter scriptural solution I provided.
I believe this post will help to give you you the proper understanding about this topic.
Can Christians communicate with the dead? A straight answer
Christians are not expected to communicate with the dead. This is a simple, straightforward answer. It’s not scriptural. Our communication is to be with the Spirit of God.
He is the One Jesus Christ said will be our Helper and the One who will guide us into all truth.
The weird scriptural solution offered
This is the weird scriptural solution offered on this online forum.
Matthew 17:3
[3]And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.
Did you see that?
The argument was that Jesus also conversed with the dead on the mount of transfiguration.
That was way out of it because that was not a good representation of what happened on the mount of transfiguration. Do you want to know why I said that? Please read my scriptural argument below:
Can Christians communicate with the dead? It’s a No
Christians should not communicate with the dead. Please find my response below:
It’s not deeply scriptural. Even after Moses and Elijah appeared on the mount of transfiguration, they went away and the disciples did not see them again. Then the voice of heaven declared that, hear Only Jesus.
Matthew 17:5
[5]While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”
Significance of the event on the mount of transfiguration
The event on the mount of transfiguration is only to show a complete handover of the law era (Moses) and the Prophet era (Elijah)Â to the grace era ( Jesus Christ).
It’s not scriptural to communicate with the dead. You communicate with the Holy Spirit of God – the Spirit of Christ.
Elijah did not even die, neither did Moses. So technically, Jesus spoke with people who were not dead.
Jesus once taught the people the reason why God is called the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He said God can’t be the God of the dead because though Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were dead physically but they are still alive.
The same applies to Moses and Elijah.
It is not scriptural to communicate with the dead. Let your communication be with the Spirit of God instead. He is the One scripturally designed to help me and you.
