Wisdom is the principal thing: Challenge of acquiring wisdom

There are no marriage, financial, or business problems. The real challenge is the challenge of acquiring wisdom.

This wisdom is not a function of your intellect. It’s not how intelligent you are – you can be knowledgeably stupid!

You can have a lot of knowledge and yet not be wise because wisdom is an impartation of God. The Bible tells us that Solomon received his wisdom because God granted it to him.

We see that phrase repeated at least 3 times from the third to the fifth chapter of 1 Kings. The Bible says ‘…and God gave Solomon wisdom.”

Wisdom is justified of by her children

We went further to speak about Luke 7:35 when Jesus made a very absolute statement, that,

“…wisdom is justified of her children.”

In essence, you don’t say wisdom, you show wisdom. Wisdom is not a collection of wise sayings, quotable quotes, or tweetable tweets. It is justified by her results.

Wisdom is the principal thing: Knowledge and wisdom

You need a level of humility to acknowledge that you know a subject, but lack the wisdom therein. The difference between knowledge and wisdom is that knowledge informs, and wisdom transforms.

Knowledge gives you a sense of pride – that’s why the Bible says “knowledge puffeth up…” (1 Cor. 8:1). It sometimes gives people the ability to communicate certain truths, howbeit those truths don’t necessarily find expression in their lives because knowledge is completely different from wisdom.

Knowledge serves as the basis and foundation for wisdom but this doesn’t mean a knowledgeable person has wisdom!

Buy wisdom

Now, let’s look at Proverbs 2:1-6:

“My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding. Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding, if thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures, then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

I want you to see the attitude here – the sense of desperation we have for mundane material things should be the same desperation for wisdom. The true labor of a man should not be in material things because they will always diminish.

The only things that do not diminish are ideas and concepts, that is wisdom. In essence, you can be seated right now and God plants an idea in your heart that four generations coming will reap its fruits.

But the car you buy now, even your son cannot inherit and drive it! Herein lies the problem; many have placed a higher premium on material things. Everything natural diminishes, so we have to come up in our understanding of life to place a higher premium on the things that do not diminish.

Law of life

Herein is the law of life; whatever is of the highest value to you is what keeps coming to you. There has to be that mental adjustment! The value you place on a thing determines the sacrifice you make for it.

“…if thou seekest her as silver and searchest for her as hid treasures, then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”

Wisdom comes from the Lord; you can’t lean on your understanding or intellect. A Masters degree or a Ph.D. does not equate wisdom!

God is a God of principles and laws, He’s not haphazard. If the Bible says the Lord giveth wisdom, then there must be a channel or system established by God wherewith and whereby we can access the wisdom that He gives.

Wisdom is the principal thing: Time to pray

Lift your hands and turn this into a confession and a prayer:

  • I choose the way of the Lord, which is the way of wisdom; not my will, not my way, not my thoughts, not my mind.
  • Lord I lean not on my own understanding, but I choose Your way.
  • My heart is reaching out and panting for Your wisdom and for Your counsel, in the mighty name of the Lord Jesus.
