Top 10 Christian Ministries in Nigeria
Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG):
This is arguably the fastest growing Pentecostal Church or ministries in the world. The General Overseer, Pastor Adeboye was some years back rated as one of the most influential 50 persons in the world.
The founder was Pa Akindayomi. He was born into the Akindayomi family of Ondo State of Nigeria in 1909. Even though he grew up surrounded by idol worshippers, he knew there existed a greater power and yearned to know more about this greater power.
He finally got to know after he also severally resisted the call of God upon his life.
Pa Josiah Akindayomi died at the age of 71 years and was succeeded by one (and largely unknown) clergy by the name Enoch Adejare Adeboye.
According to statements on the RCCG website:
“Since 1981, an open explosion began with the number of parishes growing in leaps and bounds. At the last count, there are at least about 2000 parishes of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Nigeria.”
“On the International scene, the church is present in other African nations including Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Gambia, Cameroon, and South Africa. In Europe, the church is spread in England, Germany, and France. In the United States, there are parishes in Dallas, Tallahassee, Houston, New York, Washington, and Chicago and also in the Caribbean states of Haiti and Jamaica.”
Living Faith Church (a.k.a Winners Chapel
This Christian ministry in Nigeria was founded by Bishop David Oyedepo. He is a powerful minister of God who preaches the Christian faith and also Christian prosperity. He also believes he does not only preach the Christian Kingdom prosperity, he lives it.
Dr. David Oyedepo always declares to the hearing of his listeners how he got the mandate of his ministry from God in an 18-hour vision. He believes the Lord has raised his commission to “liberate mankind in all facets of human existence, to restore broken destinies, to bring healing to the infirmed.”
According to a statement monitored on the website of the Living Faith Church (a.k.a Winners Chapel), The content of the Divine mandate received from the LORD is as follows:
“The hour has come to liberate the world from all oppressions of the devil through the preaching of the word of faith, and I am sending you to undertake this task.”
Daystar Christian Centre
This Christian ministry exists to “raise role models in the society”
The Senior Pastor and founders are Pastor Sam Adeyemi and his wife, Pastor Nike Adeyemi. They, like most the other ministries, started from humble beginnings. But the Daystar Church and ministries have grown so big over the years.
A statement monitored on the Daystar website clearly shows the humble beginning of this Church:
“I started first on radio. Later, I began to talk to a few people about the church arm of the vision. On 18th November 1995, Daystar Christian Centre was inaugurated. The inauguration was an interesting period in itself in that we didn’t have a lot of resources and we could not afford the type of accommodation we were getting either; hotels, banquets halls or some duplexes were for between N200,000 and N250,000 per annum and they wanted us to pay for two (2) years.’
Daystar Christian Centre is one of the Christian ministries in Nigeria that is actively using the internet and technology to preach and distribute gospel materials all over the world.
Deeper Christian Life Ministry
The founder of this ministry is W.F. Kumuyi, a former University lecturer at the University of Lagos. He started out with a Bible study group with 15 university students who had come to him requesting training in the Scriptures. By the early 1980’s that small group had grown to several thousand, at which time Deeper Life Bible Church was formally established.
By 1988 the congregation had grown to 50,000 and now numbers 120,000 members, making it about the third largest Christian church in the world (according to a statement on her website).
WF Kumuyi is a man with a great heart for God. He preaches powerfully on holiness and also believes Christians must get deeply involved in evangelism as shown by this statement credited to him on the Deeper life website:
“W. F. Kumuyi said: “Our emphasis should be on the practical side of going out. If the Lord comes, let him meet us working for him. Now every time I preach I try to mention evangelism.”
The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM)
The founder is Bishop Mike Okonkwo, a very passionate preacher, and talker. His influence in the Christian circle has grown over the years. He can be considered as a Christian elder statesman in Nigeria.
The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) was officially launched on the 4th of January 1981. The ministry, which took off from a humble beginning in an uncompleted building, has grown into a household name with over 160 branches in 10 nations of the world.
The ministry has her World Headquarters at Obanikoro/Anthony Oke, Lagos. With Pastoral Staff strength of over 200 men and women of God drawn across the land, the ministry has kept the vision of Jesus Christ, which is to go to the entire world and make disciples of all nations, alive.
The ministry, according to a statement monitored on the TREM website: “We are a multi-generational church committed to raising people of impact. We exist to help you and your family grow closer to God and help you fulfill your God-given purpose.”
The Latter Rain Assembly (End-Time Church)
The founder of this Church is Pastor Tunde Bakare. A very strong man who was born originally into a Muslim family but got converted on September 24, 1974, after a unique encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ.
He studied law at the University of Lagos between 1977 and 1980 and practiced law with Gani Fawehinmi Chambers, Rotimi Williams & Co, and Burke & Co, Solicitors. Perhaps, this explains why he has been a strong proponent of good governance and justice in Nigeria for so many years now.
He established his own law firm Tunde Bakare & Co (El-Shaddai Chambers) in October 1984. In May 1988, at the peak of his legal career, he was called into ministry and he pioneered the 1st Model parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. Subsequently, he founded The Latter Rain Assembly (End-Time Church) on April 1, 1989, and is currently the Serving Overseer of the church.
Latter Rain Assembly does not believe in the practice of establishing lots of parishes al over the place but instead encourages affiliate churches that are not directly linked to the church or under her control. This statement of the latter rain assembly website explains this clearly:
“We are an Apostolic Community of believers whose purpose is to carry forward the purpose of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. We are a new breed without greed. A radical opposition to corruption. Men and women, boys and girls who choose to win by righteousness.”
Latter Rain Assembly and her founder Pastor Tunde Bakare have been at the forefront of the fight against corruption, bad governance, and injustice in Nigeria.
